the difficulty of translation

we agree on one thing
that we need an interpreter
to successfully communicate

it has not always been so
we used to believe that
when we spoke
we were equally understood
maintaining careful alignment
between what was heard
and what was said

no longer is it so
for now my words
melt in the air
and only reach your heart
in unintelligible liquid form
now your silence
plugs my ear drums
and fills my mind
with words you do not speak

and now we wonder
whether we ever really
heard each other before
or have we been speaking
two different languages
all along

perhaps we once
mistook ourselves
for a joint
unified being
assumed shared thought
assumed shared meaning
assumed shared purpose

but now we see
through this illusion
recognizing the
elemental difference
between our two bodies
between our two voices
between our two hearts

so now I ask you
is this an
irrevocable condemnation
now separate
must we remain
ever apart

or can we find
a bridge between us
an island we can share
that is neither you nor I
where we can see
and be seen
where we can come together
in our separateness
